Community SPotlight: Deborah Dumas

This month, we’re spotlighting Deborah Dumas, a founding member and faithful volunteer who has been with Harmony since its start in 1991 and has seen its evolution throughout the years. A longtime resident and active member of the North Lawndale community, Deborah has served as both a mentor and a mother figure to many. For many years, she served Harmony Church as a singer and organist.

Deborah got involved with Harmony Food Pantry when it opened in 2006. “I always wanted to give, and this was the way I saw it best to serve.” She went on to describe how at the beginning, it was a challenge to get the food pantry started for the organizers and the clients. “It was more of a learning experience for both parties.” Aside from her work in the church, she worked as a counselor for incarcerated people, helping them and their families prepare to exit the prison system.

Today, she continues to be a weekly volunteer, brightening the room with her presence and her infectious smile. As we honor Black History Month, Deborah’s dedication reflects the long-standing tradition of Black women leading and serving in their communities, embodying the spirit of those who have paved the way for change through service. Harmony is lucky to have such a loyal and loving volunteer like Deborah in our community. She serves as an example for us all to follow.
