The School Bell is a-Ringing!
On August 15, Harmony Community Church and Lawndale Christian Health Center hosted the Back to School Bash, an event created to encourage student success by helping kids get ready for the new school year. Families from North Lawndale and surrounding neighborhoods came together at Harmony Community Church to enjoy food, music, and community resources.
Organizations from all over the west side were out to let the community know about the services at their fingertips. The Lawndale Christian Health Center, the University of Illinois Institute of Health, and Open Books - as well as so many others - were handing out information about their programs and how to access their services. It was wonderful to see the full spectrum of support that our city has to offer to North Lawndale.
Among those organizations was also Harmony Community Cares, handing out information about its tutoring and community arts programs which will kick off in just a few weeks on September 17th and 19th respectively. These programs provide essential academic enrichment to our students; from homework help to literacy support, from dance classes to theater programs, we are providing transformative experiences for these students.
If you’re interested in supporting education in North Lawndale, please consider volunteering for the tutoring program! And if you or someone you know is an instructor of the arts, consider being an instructor for the community arts program.
If you're interested in volunteering for either of these programs, please email LROgden@thereadeasy.com for the tutoring program and meloniebrent@gmail.com for the community arts program!
