Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country
The mission of Harmony Community Cares is:
“To plant seeds of Love and cultivate hope by collaborating to provide access to healthy food, academic enrichment, social and spiritual support, and a safe environment, for people in North Lawndale and surrounding communities.”
History and planned activities:
Harmony Community Cares is a new non-profit organization formed to help increase the resources available to the children and families of Chicago’s North Lawndale and surrounding communities. In communities where 2 out of 5 residents are food secure and violence is common, Harmony Community Cares will focus on safety, health and education.
Harmony Community Cares has its roots in the outreach mission of Harmony Community Church programs supporting North Lawndale. Harmony Church has been serving the residents of this community for over ten years through its food pantry, and more recently, through its “Harmony Kidz” tutoring programs.
Many of the children served by Harmony are reading below grade level, have poor eating habits, and suffer from trauma due to daily encounters with violence. Harmony Kidz programs are responding with opportunities for after-school tutoring, mentoring, enrichment, and nourishing food for local children.
The Harmony Food Pantry opens its doors every Wednesday morning to provide quality food to an average of 300 families a week. The pantry is run by volunteers and continually faces a need for more food than current resources are able to provide.
Harmony Community Cares will help increase support and expand the food pantry and academic/enrichment program for students. As these programs grow and neighborhood residents become more acquainted with them, Harmony Community Cares, NFP will be a dependable provider of quality programs addressing safety, food insecurity, and academic/social support for children and their parents.
